Formal Way of Wishing Someone a Happy Chinese New Year
To wish someone a Happy New year in a formal way you can say “Xīnnián kuàilè” as it is somewhat a formal way of wishing people. However, you can also use it during the regular January first New year. If you want to wish someone in a formal way in Mandarin, you can say “xīn nián kuài lè /sshin-nyen kwhy-ler/”. While if you want to wish someone in a formal way in Cantonese, you can say “sun nin fail ok”.

When you want to wish someone with happiness and joy in Chinese, you say “Gong hay fat choy”. This is usually and on most occasions spoken in Hong Kong. If you want to wish someone this in mandarin, you can simply say “gōng xǐ fā cái /gong-sshee faa-tseye/”. While if you want to wish someone in Cantonese, you can say “gong hay fat choy” to wish them.
