Zen 5 is the next-generation CPU microarchitecture from AMD, and it is on the horizon. Revealed on the roadmap in the second half of 2022, Zen 5 is slated for release in the latter half of 2024. It serves as the successor to Zen 4. And it’s anticipated to harness TSMC’s cutting-edge 4 nm and 3 nm processes. This powerhouse architecture will drive top-tier processors across various platforms.
This includes Epyc 9005 server processors (referred to as “Turin”), high-performance Ryzen 9055 mobile processors (dubbed “Strix Point”), and Ryzen 9000 series desktop processors (known as “Granite Ridge”).
AMD has not provided all the specifics about the capabilities of its upcoming chips yet. However, judging from the performance of Zen 4, the next-generation chips could be quite remarkable.
These chips will mark the second generation of CPUs on AMD’s AM5 platform. Offering a more developed foundation to build upon. Additionally, users may have the opportunity to upgrade easily with a simple CPU swap without having to upgrade their motherboard.
When Will AMD ZEN5 be Released?
Unfortunately, there is no release date for this CPU. But there has been speculation that it will launch in the second half of 2024. There have been rumors since January 2024 that AND will launch it in May or June. However, considering that the launch of Zen was in September 2022, it should not be surprising to see this processor debut around the same time. We are looking forward to this remarkable generation.
Specs
AMD hasn’t yet provided detailed specifications for Zen 5. But some confirmations and rumors give us an idea of what to expect. Leaks suggest that Zen 5 may have up to 16 cores, similar to Zen 4. There are rumors indicating that there might not be significant improvements in clock speeds.
However, AMD plans to improve performance through architectural improvements. Reports suggest a potential increase in instructions per clock (IPC) of up to 30%. If these rumors are true, it would mark a significant improvement and possibly the largest IPC increase since AMD’s original Zen generation in 2017.
Other rumors suggest that Zen 5 will have faster memory and may include FP16 AVX512 instructions. It’s also rumored to increase CPU cache sizes across the board.
Zen 5 is expected to be manufactured using TSMC’s 3nm process, with possibly an older process for the I/O die. Similar to Zen 4. AMD has mentioned that the new CPUs will have improved AI accelerators for better management of AI-driven tasks.
Additionally, AMD confirmed that Zen 5 processors will have the new RDNA 3.5 graphics architecture. It is likely to offer better onboard graphics performance than previous generations. This upgrade continues AMD’s trend of enhancing graphics capabilities in its processors.
Performance
Until AMD provides official performance numbers or confirmed specifications, discussions about performance are just speculations.
However, if these CPUs indeed have enhancements like increased cache, a new cache design, and up to a 30% boost in instructions per clock (IPC), they could be exceptionally fast. This could potentially surpass both AMD’s current CPUs. And any upcoming releases from Intel, including Arrow Lake.
While AMD doesn’t appear to be including Intel’s multi-architectural core design just yet, the roadmap hints at the possibility of Zen 4c and Zen 5c core designs. Although this may not result in a significant increase in multi-threaded performance like Intel’s approach, AMD seems poised to maintain high performance with impressive efficiency. This has been an incredible feature in recent generations.
AMD Zen 5 Pricing
As of now, there’s no official word from AMD about the pricing of Zen 5 processors. Pricing details typically come closer to the launch date. So we’ll have to wait for AMD to announce the prices. However, based on past releases and market trends, it’s expected that AMD will strive to offer competitive pricing for the CPUs, ensuring they provide good value for the performance they deliver.
